First nVidia 790i Info

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Asus Striker II with nVidia 790i Chipset
According to AnandTech.com, Asus, a third party manufacturing company has given information about nVidia’s new 790i chipset. Its apparently due out in March. The picture above is taken from AnandTech.com, showing the new ASUS Striker II Extreme board that has the new chipset. This board will have official support for 1600FSB processors and DDR3.

“The 790i chipset does away with the bridge chipset utilized on the 780i to provide PCI Express 2.0 capability. Overclocking with an early BIOS spin is also showing improvements over the 780i, especially with Yorkfield and Wolfdale processors.” - - AnandTech.com

When more information is released, you will find it here and in discussions on our forums. HBPForums.com

Radeon HD 3870 X2

Radeon HD 3870 X2
This post was provided by Thunderchild65. He posted this information on our Forums, HBPForums.com. He through together information he found around the web including a Customer Review from newegg.com.

The Radeon HD 3870 X2. This graphics card is based on the R680 graphics processing unit which consists of two RV670 GPU cores. Both cores are interconnected using a PCI-Express bridge chip and run in a CrossFire setup which is completely transparent to the end user. There is no CrossFire option to enable in CCC, nor is there one to disable it.

Since this card is a dual design, basically every component can be found twice on the PCB. That is two voltage regulation circuitries, two thermal monitors, but only one set of display output logic for two DVI ports.

This card ranges from $449 to $499.

AMD Phenom

AMD Phenom 9600
Finally, AMD has released Intels Quad-Core killer the AMD Phenom. Or have they? AMD has boasted about their “true quad-core” CPU for quite a while now. Saying that it, as opposed to Intels Quad-Core lineup, has 4 dedicated CPU cores. Well that is an accurate statement, however isn’t this battle about overall performance? Well AMD, once again, you lose. According to benchmarks in MaximumPC Magazine, the Phenom is out performed in all but 2 categories (ScienceMark 2.0 and Mainconcept Reference Encoding test). That is, by the way out of 24 total tests run on the test CPUS. The CPUs tested were the 2.6GHz Phenom 9900, 2.66GHz Core 2 Quad Q6700, 2.3GHz Phenom 9500, 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad Q6600. They also threw in an AMD Athlon 64+ BE running at 3.2GHz.

So after all the talk from AMD, they were still unable to produce a CPU to take out Intels mainline of Quad-Core procs. But don’t think that this is not a good chip. It is still a well designed CPU with good performance, just not the best. So for any of you out there that have a motherboard with a Socket AM2 that are looking to upgrade, look no further. The Phenom will blow away any previous AMD proc, and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg either. Newegg.com has the Phenom 9600 for $239.00. So unless you are really wanting to blow a lot of cash on an entire new system, don’t pass this CPU up.

NVidia 9600GT

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

nVidia
According to a recent post on MaximumPC.com, there are new details on the NVidia 9600GT. Codenamed the D9M, the 9600GT, the next mid-range card from Nvidia, comes stock with a 650 MHz core clock and a 1625 MHz unified shader clock. It will also sport a 256-bit memory bus interface unlike its predecessor the 8600GT which sports a 128-bit memory bus interface. By pairing these specs with a 900 MHz memory clock, NVidia calculates the memory bandwidth at 57.6 GB/s.
It is rumored that the card will require a 400 watt Power Supply Unit (PSU) for use. It is PCI-Express 2.0 compliant as to be expected. NVidia has confirmed the following details of D9M: DirectX 10.1 support, Shader Model 4.0, OpenGL 2.1 also.

So to sum all this up and make it easier to understand an Nvidia rep has been quoted as saying the performance gain between the 8600GT and the 9600GT is “almost double”. So now its time to wait and see what the price will be.

Online vs. In-Store

Friday, December 28th, 2007

After reading a recent post written by Jeff Bertolucci of PCWorld.com, I began to wonder, how does buying online compare to going to the actual store down the street. In my opinion if you truly understand the details and specs of what you are buying online, then that may be the better route. However buying in the store is safer than sending your credit card number across the internet.

As quoted in Jeff’s article, “Best Places to Buy Tech Products–Now and Post-Holidays”,

“Between August 2006 and the same month a year later, 14 percent of the $159 billion that U.S. shoppers spent on consumer electronics was spent online, up from 5 percent a year earlier, according to the Consumer Electronics Association.”

So what I am trying to figure out is how you all feel about the two different situations. I am going to start a new thread on HBPForums.com, and I invite you all to come by and leave us your opinion. And as always, please leave a comment on this post.

nVidia 780i SLI Released

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

nVidia 780i SLI MCP

Nvidia has recently released their follow-up to the extremely successful 680i chipset, the new 780i. Its packed with cool features like 3-way SLi technology for those who have bottomless pockets and want to add three Geforce 8800 GTX cards or even the 8800 Ultra. Its the first platform designed for ESA-certified components. You will have complete control over your system through the use of a well designed 3D system monitoring application.
The new motherboards will have PCI Express 2.0 slots (as described here), but don’t worry about having to buy different graphics cards, 2.0 is fully backwards compatible. Another cool feature of these boards will be High Definition Audio (HDA), that is designed to deliver 192 kHz/32-bit quality for eight channels.

The true need to know details:
Socket type - LGA 775
Front Side Bus - 1333/1066/800/533
Memory Type - Dual channel memory architecture. DDR2 1200(EPP1.0)/800/667/533

So here is my opinion on this board. While it will probably turn heads at first with the 3-way SLI, I don’t really see much in terms of improvements. Granted we will need to wait and see where it hold up against other chipsets, but I feel like its more so competing against the likes of the X38 chipset from Intel as opposed to the new X48 chipset that is to be released soon, I hope. Another question that is brought to mind was, why DDR2 support and not DDR3. If this board is to carry us into next year then why use RAM technology that is already becoming last-gen. I will keep my eyes open to what different vendors will do with the chipset but at this point I am still waiting for the X48.

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

***HBP CHOICE***
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650
Intels new Core 2 Extreme QX9650 is a monster. And you will need a monster pile of cash to acquire one too with a price range of $1,000-$1,200. Four cores running at 3.0GHz though is unbelievable and a Front Side Bus of 1,333 MHz. For newer games out like Crysis, this is the processor you will need in order to eat these games alive. You will need to ensure you have a Socket 775 motherboard to use this CPU though. I wouldn’t want you to spend all that money and not be able to use it. One good option is the ASUS Striker Extreme LGA 775.

Gigabyte Mercury Pro

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Gigabyte Mercury Pro
Gigabyte has developed a new case for all the enthusiasts out there. The Gigabyte Mercury Pro is amazing. It comes preloaded with Gigabytes own water-cooling setup, the Gigabyte Galaxy II water-cooling system, out of the box. And Gigabyte has done their best to conceal as much of the tubing as possible, and they did a decent job. The radiator could be larger. Due to its size the water cooling system makes a little noise, which for some contradict the point of water cooling. While it does do a decent job of cooling, it could be better.
As for the case itself, its very spacious. The drive bays make use of a well designed locking mechanisms. Simply slide each drive into the bay until you hear “click” and thats it (The Hard Drives have add-on retention clips). It is clear once you open the case that Gigabyte really spent time into creating this case. It is very well built.

PCI Express 2.0

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

ASUS P5E3 Deluxe
A question I have had lately was, will a PCI Express x16 in one of the new PCI Express 2.0 technology?!?! The answer is yes. I recently listened to a podcast on Maximumpc.com, which talks all about the new technology. So if you have a current gen, DirectX 10 graphics card and are looking to buy a new motherboard that includes PCI Express 2.0 slots, you will still be able to use the graphics cards. Good news for me, seeing as I just bought the new XFX Geforce 8800 GTX. Now my next purchase will be the motherboard and cpu.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
So how much storage is to much storage? How about 1 terabyte? Personally I couldn’t fill 1 terabyte. I can’t even imagine what you could do with that much storage. The new Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 is a one terabyte drive that will not disappoint the storage happy users out there. Not only does it have a huge capacity split between 4 platters, 250 GB each, but its also fast as hell too with an average read time of 86.6 MB/s. Out of the three 1 terabyte drives on the market, the Western Digital Caviar GP, the Hitachi 7K1000 and the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, Seagates drive beats out both drives in sheer speed. If you are looking for good performance and cool additional features like power saving features or backup features, you need to look elsewhere. This drive is meant for speed and speed only.

Neosonik Wireless Home Theater

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

I was just reading a post on Gadget7.com about this new wireless home theater system by Neosonik and felt it was necessary to bring to your attention. Wireless is the way to go these days, thats for sure. With the new Wireless-N technology entering draft phase 2, the speeds and security are beginning to really improve. This new wireless home theater system transmits audio and video through a wireless signal at 60mbps. Based around the same technology as 802.11a Neosonik created airpower technology that can stream up to 7.2 surround audio and HD video wirelessly. So with this system you eliminate, generally, the only problem with home theater systems, the wires.

Check it out in further details on Gadget7.com

Mtron MSD-S25032

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Ladies and Gentlemen this is the fastest notebook drive on the planet and most likely in the universe as well. However, the capacity is low. A full 32GB. In comparison to the fastest desktop drive, the 150GB Western Digital Raptor, well there is no comparison. The Raptor was torn to shreds. Oh and for the record, its not exactly a fair fight. The Mtron MSD-S25032 is not a hard drive, its a Solid State Drive. One benefit, other than the shear speed, is the durability. Hard drives are treated like fragile pieces of equipment that cannot be moved or even bumped into in the slightest little bit, while a solid state drive can be just about thrown against a wall and never even flinch. Is this the future of drives?

Cooler Master Cosmos Case

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

Cooler Master Cosmos is a superior case for anyone that is looking to build a new PC or simply replace their old case. Maximum PC Magazine actually used it for this years Dream Machine. It has a clean silver look with rails on the top and bottom of the case that allow it to be easily carried.
There are five 5.25-inch drive bays that have a very easy-to-use push-button locking mechanism for securing each component. While designed with the water cooling fans in mind, it caters to the air cooling crowd as well. There are ceiling grills on the top of the case that are simply waiting for a water cooling radiator to be placed and a detachable 12cm fan that pulls air from the bottom of the case. There is also a unique plastic bar that runs across the case that pulls air into the GPU area of the case. Hard Drives could use a bit more airflow but hey Im not complaining. This thing is sweet.

Recovery Disks!!!

Friday, August 31st, 2007

What are Recovery Disks? Well a recovery disk is created from a recovery partition on your hard drive. Have you ever noticed that your new laptop or desktop has a D: drive, E: drive or both? Well if you have 3, including the average C: drive everyone knows about, then most likely you have a recovery partition on your hard drive. A recovery partition is a section of your hard drive that is set aside that contains an image of your hard drive in “Factory State“, meaning like new.
On most brand new PCs, it is recommended that you create a recovery disk before continuing on with normal use. A recovery disk is the exact same as a recovery partition but on a disk. In the case that your operating system fails, which happens often, you can use this disk to fix or completely recover your hard drive. It is a handy tool that I recommend everyone create. In the case that you do create the disc, DON’T LOSE IT, because it can only be created once.

*Not all problems with you operating system can be fixed with the aide of a recovery disk. Please don’t over abuse.

Microsofts New Gaming Mouse

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Microsoft recently introduced its new, more ergonomic, gaming mouse. Set for release in October, the Sidewinder is designed specifically for gamers. Gamers tend to get lost when chasing down enemy soldiers, being caught up in a cloud of smoke, or spawning somewhere they don’t recognize. For those gamers Microsoft has included the “Quick Turn” function. This will allow you to dial in on your location anywhere on the current map or level. The Sidewinder is a fully customizable mouse. You can adjust weight, change the mouse feet, and more. And get this, there is a built in LCD on the mouse. Its used for tracking macros and gaming habits. What that will do for you as a gamer? I don’t know, but it seems interesting.

Official Site Launch!

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Hardware Blog Portal has been attempting to limp off a joint forum site, CybersForum.com, for a while now and we are just not getting the traffic we like. One of the reasons I believe is its such a wide open site, there is just to much to keep up with. So I have been working on a new forum site directly for Hardware Blog Portal. I would now like to present HBPForums.com! The site is directed at all the readers of Hardware Blog Portal.com and gamers around the net.

We have a clan section on our forums for gaming clans to chat about their clans, and challenge other clans. We are also offering cheap ads and links for other websites and blogs out there. So if you have an itch to post an ad or link to your site, go to the advertisement section of the site for pricing. Also, if there are any gamers out there who are trying to create a Battlefield 2 or 2142 clan, come on by and post on the forums, I would like to create a gaming clan. We also have a Teamspeak server. Go to the Teamspeak server thread on the forums to login. Once again, I invite everyone to come and join us on the forums. Lets build the best community out there. HBPForums.com

32-Bit Vista Vs. 3GB or more of RAM

Monday, July 9th, 2007

There are a lot of people out there asking why their systems will not recognized more RAM. Their motherboards support up to 4 or even 8GB or RAM and yet, Vista only shows a little over 3GB. Why? Well the answer is simple, Microsoft doesn’t like you. Ha Ha, no just kidding, Vista 32-bit will never use a full 4GB of RAM due the memory IO reservations, which control how the onboard memory for your installed devices, like graphics cards, use your system memory. According to Microsoft, the 32-bit version of Vista is limited to 3.12GB of total memory. Thanks Microsoft.

So if you are in the market to build a PC, buy a system or upgrade your PC, keep in mind that Windows Vista 32-bit will only support 3.12GB of RAM, so don’t waste your money on upgrades.

Corsair 16GB Flash Voyager

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Yes, thats right, we can all now get our hands on a 16GB flash drive. The Corsair 16GB Flash Voyager. It wasn’t to long ago, the 1GB drives were released blowing everyone away with the ease of use and convenience they provided. Well now you get the same features with a hell of a lot more store space. In actual performance, this drive is only topped buy one other in write speeds, the 4GB Kingston Traveler. Perfect for the technician on the move, or the business person that needs to transport important files, or for the average student who needs a place to store all the papers they have written. Its perfect for everyone!

Protection for 64-Bit Vista

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

This could be an arguable post, but I recently discovered that most of the top name security apps out there do not support the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. The only brand that I have found that 64-bit Vista supports is Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 and Trend Micro Anti-Virus 2007. TMAV 07 would install from the disc with no problem, but TMIS 07 I had to go to the Trend Micro support site to obtain the 64-bit installer. I was trying to use Webroot Spysweeper together with Trend Micro AV but was unable to install Webroot. Have any feedback around this topic? Post it on the forums at CybersForum.

Have Your Battlefield Clan Reviewed

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

As you can see, on the right side of the page, there is a Battlefield Clan section with clans that I have reviewed in the past. The clans I have reviewed here on HardwareBlogPortal, showed a lot of appreciation and I have had a lot of people asking about review their clans. So what I wanted to do was post the guidelines to a Battlefield Clan Review. When I review a clan, I will spend a week playing on the clans server and getting to know some of the clan members. I will also, roam around their website/forum to get a general idea of the type of environment each clan presents to the public and to its own members. Only the best will be reviewed. The only real rule I have at this point is I ask for a link back on the main page of your site.

Essential Gaming Components: Step 1

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

I wanted to touch on a few tools that were key to multi player gaming on the PC. No matter your genre of gaming, you should be able to take something away from this post. Most games these days require a pretty decent gaming system. What goes into a good gaming system? Well you don’t need to have the high dollar goods to push your games, but the better the hardware the longer you will be able to keep up with technology over the oncoming months. So if you have the budget, I would recommend focusing on 3 major components.

One, your CPU. This will dictate a lot of things, mainly core performance. I would recommend having a Dual Core processor, because all the new games coming out this year will most likely be multi-threaded, and for the ones that are not, the Dual Core procs will push them even better.

The USB Virus Tracker

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Apparently these new flash drives from Digiworks will chase down virus’s and eliminate them, dubbed the USB Virus Chaser. So a portable anti-virus device. Could we not just simply install a particular AV program of choice onto a flash drive of our choice? Im curious to know how these things turn out in the long run.

Clan Review #2: Battlefieldbs.com

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

Here it is everyone, Clan Review #2. I spent the last week and a half monitoring a few different Battlefield Clans, and BattlefieldBs.com really stood out. They have one of the best gaming environments I have seen in a long while. Definitely worth a look. So what I have done was interviewed the clan leader, Gen.Bs, and posted the interview here for you all to read. Below the questions, I let Gen.Bs tell us all a little more in depth facts about the clan. Its a great post and I want to thank Gen.Bs and the rest of the BattlefieldBs clan for their cooperation.

Interview

How long has your clan been around? 4 years

How is the clan setup? Are there Divisions, Squads, Teams, etc…? We call them battle groups which are named Viper and Reaper

How serious are you about Leagues? i.e TWL, CAL…. If so what is your rank in each?
We are in TWL and we are on rung 112 and our record is 6/2

How many members do you have? 47 active as in they report in and play on the server continuous basis

Is there a Ranking scale in the clan? We do have a ranking scale in the clan, it is modeled after our military.

Are you planning to remain a BF2 clan or are you moving over to 2142 full time? Believe it or not. We do have a group of members who play 2142 but not that many. BF2 vanilla has captured the attention of most of our members. That is where you can find us most of the time.

How long did it take for you to become a justified clan? We have been around for 4 years and it took about 2 years for us to gain a proper ground in the BF2 community. I can say this because people started wanting to do reviews of our clan and mod groups such as Department Store Battle and EOD wanted to have us as beta testers. Our server numbers say it all. People like our rules although we do have a lot.

Are there any upcoming events in the near future, for the clan? Nope we just play and have fun.

We formed 4 years ago, Godfather was in a clan called (-BG-) Brothers Grimm. I had just purchased Battlefield Vietnam and was looking for servers to play on when I found the (-BG-) Server. I then joined that clan and GF (Godfather) and I became friends.

Vista Rollback to XP

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

One of the most frequently asked questions I get on a daily basis is, can you roll Vista Back to XP?! Through a lot of research and requests, I have determined this; If you want to take advantage of the most current hardware components, while using Windows XP, buy a computer with XP on it. Yea there are still some out there. Thats the easiest way to do so.

I recently tried to actually do this on an HP Laptop and everything went successfully until I tried loading the last 2 drivers. Both of which were related to nVidia MCP51 chip. I was unable to find this anywhere. I called HP, they told me it wasn’t available for XP. I called Microsoft, they said, call HP. I called nVidia, they didn’t answer. So I decided to call every major vendor out there, and there, HP, Sony, nVidia, ATI, Intel, Microsoft, Gateway and even ACER(who is having their own problems at this point). The only one that could tell me anything about this situation was Sony. They told me that a solution for this problem was being worked out and they would be releasing the drivers to allow you to roll your Windows Vista computer back to XP in a few months. Thank you Sony.

Samsungs Spinpoint Series HDD

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Realizing there is more to hard drives than just size and speed, Samsung has began releasing its new series called Spinpoint drives. These drives are nearly silent. Using SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies to increase the drive speed while reducing noise. These are 3.5 inch drives running at 7,200 RPM being made available this month in 80GB and 160 GB versions.

Clan Review #1: Full Out War

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Full Out War is a Battlefield gaming clan that is currently involved in both BF2 and BF2142 gaming. Their clan has been around since September of 2005, and contains about 30 members, making them a very distinguished clan. They currently compete on TWL(Team Warfare League) 5v5 and 8v8 ladders for BF2. For those that enjoy being recognized for your hard work, FOW has different ranks you can obtain as you grow within the clan. New Recruit, Full member, Officer, and Clan Leader.

FOW is currently recruiting members that are active, mature, and would prefer members with reputable skill. However even those that are not the greatest gamers are still welcome to apply, FOW members will gladly help you improve. FOW is committed to improvement. They have practices every Sunday at 3pm PST and Thursday at 7pm PST. They heavily look down on cheaters. FOW also requests that you have Teamspeak if you plan to join their clan.

TEAMSPEAK IP is 66.135.41.33:1123
TEAMSPEAK PASSWORD: monroe

Cerberus:”If 2 years from now BF2 is obsolete, we will probably have other games playing. We aren’t strictly BF2, it is currently our strongest game, but again, plenty of room for expansion in other games.”

Along with Battlefield, FOW has now started to play Counterstrike: Source as well. So all you CSS gamers, they have room for you too.

Cerberus, the clan leader has done a lot, along with the help of his clan to create one of the best environments for a Battlefield clan on the net. If you were looking for a clan to join Hardware Blog Portal highly recommends you give these guys a chance.

Hey Battlefield Clans

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Are you in a Battlefield 2 or 2142 clan? Well something I have never seen is a support site for gaming clans. So for the month of April, at least once a week(maybe more), I will be writing a review about a different Battlefield Clan. If everything goes well I will add a Clan section to the site. Clan of the month and then Clan of the Year would be my ultimate goal. As a former clan member myself, I understand that some clans don’t always get their name out there. I want to change that. With your help and feedback on our forums (Cybersforum.com), we can create a great community for all Battlefield gamers.

Ja Kel Daily Dot Com

It seems that making money online is the number one reason to blog these days. A rather new site that touches on some hardware devices that you and I may use in our daily lives. Ja Kel Daily Dot Com. The site looks very familiar to anyone who has read some of John Chow Dot Com. Ja Kel Daily Dot Com has a lot of potential. The creator likes to share changes he is making and different ad services he is using to make money. The objective of the site is to spread the word on different routes the average blogger can take to make money. We can all learn a lot from this site over time.

Lets Start…

Lets start off on the right foot. There are a lot of great PC related blogs out there I would love to mention here on The Portal, but for now I would like to mention just a few.

It seems everyone is out to make a quick and easy buck these days, but there are not to many that are really doing it all that well with blogs. If you are into making money online, then I will try to point you in the right direction. Here are a few sites you need to check out: John Chow Dot Com and Blog Rambler.com. Both sites are developed by completely different types of bloggers and you will notice the difference when you see them.

John Chow Dot Com is a somewhat seasoned site with a lot to it. This site covers all sorts of topics, including tips to make money online. Mr. Chow has put into action a great plan to help create back-links to his site, while also helping other bloggers as well. Check out this review on his page.

Blog Rambler is a blog masters page. This is a brand new site from a seasoned veteran. Its simple to the average user, but using well developed tricks of the trade and tips from some high ranking Google officials, this “Redneck Programmer from Mississippi” has proven to the world he knows what he is doing. This site and others he has created are definitely something to pay attention to. It covers topics from Google’s Analytics to Wordpress design.

One more site I stumbled across just the other day is Laptopgamers.com. This site is a great site for the gamers in all of us. It covers a wide range of hardware topics, and if you are looking to step into an online gaming community this would be a great place to start. Check it out.

Welcome All!!!

I have been searching everywhere around the internet for months now trying to find a site that would provide me with all that I wanted to do in one location. Search, watch, listen, communicate, etc… I still have not found it. So, what I have decided to do is, create it on my own.

What you will find here on Hardware Blog Portal is my take on the tech world as it grows and expands. With the help of all of you, I plan to report on all the new tech stuff that effects our lives on a daily basis while creating a community that can help others cope with these realities. Not everyone understands the importance of technology these days. Topics you can look forward to us covering are PC Hardware (both Laptop and Desktop), Internet junk (including Social Sites like Myspace.com), online gaming (including Clan showcases), how to make money online, new software that is coming out (Like Vista) Cell Phones, Cameras, and other everyday devices. Overall, things that we all deal with on a day to day basis. Its a free environment, so lets all just have some fun and see what we can create.

Thanks for stopping by!!!
